The menu at Downstate is a celebration of Mexican cuisine, featuring thoughtfully composed dishes that bring together fresh ingredients and bold, nuanced tastes. Must-try items include the hearty Pozole, a soul-warming pork broth stew bursting with carnitas, hominy, and fresh veggies like cabbage, jalapeño, and radish, served with the perfect crunch of tortilla chips. For breakfast lovers, the Albañil Breakfast Platter offers a satisfying plate of eggs cooked in red and green sauces, accompanied by whole black beans and crema, delivering a perfect harmony of textures and flavors to kick-start your day.
The quesadilla here is truly exceptional, made with a 10-inch blue corn tortilla loaded with melty Oaxaca cheese, crema, cotija, and fresh, crisp radish and cilantro. Each bite is a creamy, smoky delight that complements the café’s expertly crafted espresso beverages like the rich cappuccino latte, smooth chai latte, or the bold cortado. The ever-popular tamales come in several delicious varieties—from pork guajillo and morita with sesame to chicken and nut verde—each wrapped in a soft, delicate masa that melts in your mouth.
Whether you’re savoring the sweet, pillowy Mexican sweet bread called the concha or indulging in a savory torta layered with refried beans, pickled jalapeños, and fresh cheese, Downstate’s menu resonates with authenticity and passion. Patrons rave about their generous portions and the consistent quality that makes every visit memorable, though it’s wise to prepare for a short wait during busy times, as the care in each dish takes a bit of time but is unquestionably worth it.
The atmosphere at Downstate is notably friendly and relaxed, with staff who make you feel like a regular from your very first visit. This genuine hospitality, paired with an intimate setting where seating is limited, cultivates a special sense of community. As one reviewer affectionately puts it, after a couple of visits, you'll feel like everyone knows your name. The neighborhood vibes encourage both casual meet-ups and solo coffee breaks, although the buzz and limited space suggest it’s best visited with some flexibility regarding seating.

Friendly help and the neighborhood vibe that in a visit or two, makes you feel like everyone will know your name. Run, don’t walk—especially since they’re open 7 days a week. Our party had the Mexican hot chocolate with oat milk, Albañil breakfast platter, papas con queso, avocado huarache, chilaquiles and ginger shots: 10/10 on everything.
Went here three days in a row for breakfast because I had to try everything on the menu! The food is so delicious! Seating is really limited soo be prepared, you may have to take it to go.
I got a concha, my daughter a burrito, my other daughter got a gordita, the concha was amazingly delicious, loved every bite I could only eat half, it was huge, my daughter also could not finish her burrito, but she also enjoyed it, my other daughter got a gordita, we didn’t expect for it to look like it did, usually a gordita has filling inside, this one was like a sandwich with what looked like a hard tostada on the ends, she liked the filling, but was a bit disappointed at what she ordered, I got the mango/ginger juice, my kids got the jamaica and banana horchata, and they drank it, but also expected to taste like what I make at home, overall I was satisfied with my meal, oh my hubby oood and ahhh’d when he bit out of the concha I brought him back home
Downstate is such a gem! They do not skimp on quality. I ordered the huevos albanil - delicious. I’ve also had their pozole soup, burritos and hurrache and have yet to be disappointed. Food can take up to 15+ but it’s worth the wait! Cute place to catch up w a friend or quick stop for coffee. I wanted to work from there but it was busy and didn’t want to take up a table for too long.
Very impressed with the food and drinks. Comfy atmosphere to have a meal in. 100% chance that we will end up frequenting this spot. If you haven’t done so yet, you gotta check it out. You won’t be disappointed
I was told by a friend to check out this place, and I’m so glad I did! I decided to try their famous breakfast burrito and the torta for lunch. The burrito was flavorful and perfectly cooked, while the torta was packed with fresh ingredients that tasted like they were made with love. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with great music that set the perfect mood. The staff were incredibly attentive, and it was heartwarming to see how they made an effort to speak Spanish to my mom, helping her choose the best dishes. We had such a wonderful time that. we’ll definitely be coming back regularly!
Had an amazing lunch at Downstate Newburgh. We tried all three types of tamales and were super impressed. Best tamales I’ve had in a longggg time. The chilaquiles were also amazing. Highly recommend and will definitely be back.
Beautiful and welcoming spot. Outstanding food with even better service and people. Great any day and any time. Bring friends or eat and work for a bit. The pozole feels like home and is my go to but you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu
